there’s this thing they don’t tell you about adulthood… 

it’s not about missing the “young” life — that time where you didn’t have to worry about bills, rent, work. 

it’s missing that younger you, and the things you did when you were free of adulthood. somewhere along the line, when you aren’t even looking, you slough off that old you, and you don’t get it back.

i’ve been an adult for 6 years now, but adulthood? this is still new. and right now, i miss old me something awful. she didn’t have it all figured out, and was better off for it.

So you’re washing your hair today and your hair is bleached blonde but your dark roots are showing. You’re using a shampoo with argan oil, because it smooths it all out, and all the white-blonde hair is hanging in your eyes and suddenly you can’t breathe.

Because you don’t know that hair and you don’t know this person and it hits you like a freight train that you’ve been hiding in plain sight and you’ve let them do it to you, let them take away something about yourself you loved and you can’t breathe and your chest aches and you don’t know this girl in the shower.

You wash your hair and towel dry it and don’t comb the oil through, not today, no, not today. You comb it out, bottom to top, and when you’re done, you get out the hair lightener. You get your roots done, get them white, and wash it all out.

And then you dig in the back of the cabinet, find the dye you stuffed back there a long time ago.

Rose and violet gem and aquamarine and you know this girl. No more blonde. No more hiding.
