THRANDUIL TREATED GLOIN AND COMPANY LIKE SHIT JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE LOST AND STARVING IN MIRKWOOD

 AND KINDA SORTA FOUGHT AGAINST THEM AT THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

Gloin probably left that battle with injuries, injuries he went home to his wife and young child with, and he told Gimli the story of how he got them as Gimli grew up

and Gimli inherited the hatred of his father

and yet here he is, with the elf prince of Mirkwood, ready and willing to die fighting with him for the good of middle earth because they had grown so close

Adding to this^ after Sauron and ‘all evil’ is defeated Legolas and Gimli go off adventuring together and then when Gimli grows old Legolas builds a ship and takes him to the Grey Havens
